What to wear for your beach session 🤍

One little thing that makes a big difference to how your photos look is what you wear, so here are a few tips to help you feel comfortable and look beautifully styled on camera.

For beach sessions, I love natural, soft, earthy colours that work beautifully with the surroundings:

Browns · Soft whites · Black · Beige · Greys · Denim · Soft blues · Soft greens

Think cosy, relaxed and effortless rather than dressed up. Jeans with a lovely jumper, a loose shirt, a cosy cardigan, a simple dress or a soft knit are all great choices.

I also recommend avoiding large logos, big graphics and very strong patterns. They can draw attention away from the people in the photograph and can make the images feel a little busier. Small, subtle patterns and simple textures are absolutely fine.

If it's colder, thin layers under a jumper work much better than a big coat. This keeps you warm while still allowing your clothes to look flattering and natural in the photographs.

The most important thing is that you can move and play comfortably. Your clothes don't need to be precious or restrictive, you just want to be able to sit down, move around and enjoy the session without worrying about your outfit.

And if the location and weather allow, bare feet are always lovely for beach sessions. There's something really natural about kicking off your shoes, feeling the sand beneath your feet and letting the little ones run free.

A little note about outdoor clothing…

Because we're in Scotland, I completely understand the instinct to reach for the fleece, body warmer and full hiking gear! By all means, bring practical layers if the weather calls for them, we can use them between shots or when you need an extra layer.

For the photographs themselves, though, softer everyday clothing tends to work beautifully. Fleeces, gilets, waterproofs and hiking trousers are brilliant for a hill walk, but can look quite bulky and sporty in photographs.

Instead, think:

Jumpers + jeans
Cosy cardigans
Loose linen or cotton shirts
Simple dresses or skirts
Soft knitwear
Comfortable trousers in neutral tones

You don't need everyone to match. Co-ordinating colours and textures look much more natural than identical outfits.🤍

The aim is simply to feel like yourselves, just in clothes that photograph beautifully and allow you to move, cuddle and play.
